Like all the best Hunter Valley wineries, Tintilla has an inspiring origin story. The vineyard was the vision of Robert Lusby, a skilled vascular surgeon who, after many years dedicated to his medical career, realised that he couldn’t remain in the profession forever.
Driven by a desire for change and a longing to pursue something beyond the operating room, Robert began to explore new avenues. It was during this period of reflection that he discovered the world of winemaking. Well, maybe not discovered. Perhaps rediscovered is the right word. Robert has always had a deep appreciation for good wine (who doesn’t) and has frequently indulged in learning about and tasting various wines from around the world. Eager for a fresh challenge, he decided to shift his focus and embark on a new chapter of his life, eventually founding what would become Tintilla Estate Wines in 1994.
The Birth of Tintilla Estate: A Family’s Connection to the Hunter Valley
Now, we’ve established that Robert and his family loved a good bottle of wine, but what exactly attracted the Lusby’s to the Hunter Valley region specifically? Well, the Lusby family’s connection to the Hunter Valley dates back to the late 1700s with the discovery of the naming of the valley by their ancestor, John Hunter. It was for this reason that Robert felt a deep sense of connection to the region and its rich winemaking history.
In 1993, they purchased a tree-covered lot on Hermitage Rd, which was previously used for mine props. After clearing the land and improving the soil, they began planting their first vines in 1994, starting with Shiraz and Semillon. Over the next few years, they planted Merlot, Sangiovese, and Cabernet Sauvignon, with their first full vintage in 1998. They opened their cellar door in 2000 and built a winery in 2005 when sons James and John took over.
A Family Affair
Most days, these days, you’ll find Robert Lusby, a retired surgeon and ex-vintner, sitting back with a lovely white, enjoying the fruits of his labour, having established Tintilla wines in 1994. “But who’s running the show now?” you may be wondering.
Well, sons James and John now oversee the operations of Tintilla, with their father intermittently popping in to offer some of his wine-making wisdom. Robert’s sons recall their love for the craft from a young age (no, not that young!) as the family would often venture to some of the world’s most prestigious winemaking regions on holiday.
